Labour MP proposes no limits on abortion

A Labour MP has suggested legalising abortion as much as the purpose of birth, an especially controversial move that might upset the British consensus on the difficulty.

While within the USA abortion is a hotly debated political topic, with political activists on each side making every effort to pull the law within the direction they favour, in Britain the political classes generally agree that the difficulty has been decided.

That consensus currently states that abortion as much as 24 weeks is appropriate, but after that time it’s against the law.

While this consensus does mean that the pro-life position in Britain has made little progress, it also implies that pro-abortion activists generally refrain from the sorts of demands seen by their American counterparts, similar to abortion as much as (and even sometimes after) the purpose of birth.

Now nevertheless, Tonia Antoniazzi, Labour MP for Glower, has moved to upset that balance by tabling an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill that may result in the entire decriminalisation of abortion in England and Wales.

Antoniazzi’s proposal would also remove legal penalties for girls who self-administer abortions.

Catherine Robinson, of Right To Life UK, said, “This would permit abortion as much as birth, even for reasons similar to the sex of the child … It removes all legal safeguards and protections for the unborn child.”

Research by ComRes has previously suggested that just one per cent of girls support abortion at any point in a pregnancy, with 70 per cent suggesting that the present 24 week limit is simply too generous and needs to be reduced to twenty weeks.

The variety of abortions has risen sharply in England and Wales within the last 10 years. From 2012 to 2016 the figure was solid at around 185,000 per yr. By 2019 nevertheless this figure had risen sharply to over 210,000 per yr after which rose sharper still, reaching over 250,00 in 2022.
