We’ve all heard them—phrases that sound sensible, insightful, and biblical. But are they really?
First Corinthians 10:13 is considered one of the primary verses I memorized as a latest believer, and its truth has carried me through many a temptation: “No temptation has seized you except what’s common to man. And God is faithful; he is not going to allow you to be tempted beyond what you may bear. But when you find yourself tempted, he can even provide a way out so that you could rise up under it.”
Notice two essential parts of this empowering verse. First, God won’t ever allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear. This tells us we are able to have victory over any temptation we encounter. Nothing is just too hard to withstand.
Second, God will at all times provide a strategy to escape. Joseph is an amazing example of this. Remember when Potiphar’s wife tried to entice him to sleep together with her? “My husband is away, and I’ve ordered all of the servants out of the home,” she said. “Come to bed with me. No one will ever know…”
I’m sure her offer was mighty tempting. He was young and virile, and he or she was wealthy and exquisite. But Joseph knew giving in to his desires could be a sin. Instead of succumbing, he took the “way out” God provided. When Potiphar’s wife caught him by his cloak, “he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the home” (Genesis 39:12). Not very dignified, but highly effective.
As long as we’re alive, our sinful nature will tempt us. Notice the wording within the passage above. It doesn’t say, “should you are tempted.” It says, “when you find yourself tempted.” Knowing this, we’d be sensible to establish this three-fold defense before we encounter a temptation: First, memorize 1 Corinthians 10:13. Second, search for the way in which of escape. Third, take it.
