Can Christians Eat Halal Food? What the Bible Says

Growing up in NYC, I saw many restaurants and grocery stores that sold halal food. I lived about 4 blocks from a big mosque, and over time they bought property on that street and introduced shops and restaurants that sold halal food. Honestly, I didn’t know what it was or what that meant back then, and so I didn’t eat it. Now, a few years later, halal food is much more widely available, which has led some to ask: is it okay for Christians to eat halal food? The quick answer is, it depends, so keep reading to learn when it is appropriate and when it’s unacceptable.

What Is Halal Food?

Before we dive into whether it’s okay for Christians to eat halal food, let’s make sure that we understand what it’s.

Halal food is food and drinks that’s permissible to eat under Islamic law. The word halal is an Arabic word which means lawful or permissible. There are specific rules that determine what’s permissible, and these rules come from the Quran and follow the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad. Halal food can confer with the food you eat and even how animals are slaughtered. Muslims are permitted to eat beef, chicken, turkey, goat, deer, and lamb, just as many individuals do.

However, there are restrictions on how these animals are killed that may qualify (or disqualify) them for being halal. For example, the animal should be slaughtered by a Muslim, who invokes the name of Allah after they kill the animal. It should be alive and healthy on the time of slaughter, and all of the blood should be drained from the animal, as Muslims are usually not allowed to eat blood of any kind. These rules apply to meat and livestock; foods corresponding to seafood, fruits, vegetables, and nuts are typically considered halal and don’t require any special preparation.

Within the Muslim dietary laws, there may be one huge exception. Pork is forbidden. I remember growing up seeing a Chinese restaurant that served halal food. That was different for me since it meant that restaurant didn’t sell pork fried rice or boneless BBQ ribs or any American Chinese food restaurant dishes that contained pork. It can also be vital to notice that cross-contamination shouldn’t be allowable for a food to be halal. Food that is ready cannot are available contact with anything that’s forbidden, or it is not any longer considered halal.

Is it Okay for Christians to Eat Halal Food?

The Bible doesn’t specifically say you possibly can or cannot eat halal food; nonetheless, it gives us some guidelines. As I discussed earlier, the right answer as to whether Christians can eat halal food is that it depends. Let me explain.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses food that had been sacrificed to idols. Some within the church felt it was okay to eat it, while others didn’t. Out of that situation, we discover guidelines that apply to this case. There are two that tell us when it is appropriate and two that can tell us when it shouldn’t be.

Acceptable Reason 1 to Eat Halal Food: There is Only One God

4 So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing in any respect on the planet” and that “There is not any God but one.” 5 For even when there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are numerous “gods” and plenty of “lords”), 6 yet for us there may be but one God, the Father, from whom all things got here and for whom we live; and there may be but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things got here and thru whom we live.  – 1 Corinthians 8:4-6

When you understand that there is barely one God, you then realize that any food that’s sacrificed or prepared in honor of an idol or one other god doesn’t change the character of what that food is. In Islam, the word for God is Allah. We know that the Muslim understanding of who God is differs from the view of Christians. While that is critical by way of relationship with God or salvation, for Christians it does not likely matter by way of food. If you’re concerned that you simply cannot eat halal food since it has been prepared by a Muslim, don’t be. It is perfectly acceptable to eat, and also you are usually not unsuitable should you do.

Acceptable Reason 2 to Eat Halal Food: Food is Food

But food doesn’t bring us near to God; we are not any worse if we don’t eat, and no higher if we do. – 1 Corinthians 8:8

Paul makes a straightforward but profound statement about food here: it’s just food. What you eat doesn’t bring you closer to God, nor does it drive you farther away. If you need to walk right into a halal restaurant or buy halal food within the food market, go right ahead. It won’t damage your walk with God, and like most food, in the event that they prepare it well, you then will probably enjoy it.

Unacceptable Reason 1 to Eat Halal Food: The Caveat of Conscience

Paul warns us that some believers could also be weaker of their faith. It is feasible they might have been a former Muslim or have had another experience, and for them to eat halal food could also be sinful to them. If that is what they consider, then they mustn’t eat halal food. This is like other convictions as well, where there could also be differing opinions, corresponding to dancing, drinking alcohol, listening to secular music, or some other issue that shouldn’t be black or white but may land in the grey area. If eating halal food violates your individual convictions, then don’t eat it.

Unacceptable Reason 2 to Eat Halal Food: Neglecting Your Brother’s Conscience

For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all of your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what’s sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them in this fashion and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. – 1 Corinthians 8:10-12

There is one scenario during which a Christian should never eat halal food, no matter how they feel about it personally. This applies when eating it could cause a stumbling block to a different brother or sister. A stumbling block happens when someone who has a particular conviction about something, corresponding to eating halal food, sees one other more mature believer doing what they consider to be sinful. That brings confusion, and as an alternative of helping them, it could actually hurt them. In situations like this, even when you have got a special opinion or conviction, it’s best to never eat halal food in front of a brother or sister. I’ll add that if this shouldn’t be your conviction and also you are usually not of their presence, then it’s okay to eat it.

Let Love be the Guide When Choosing Whether to Eat Halal Food

This issue of whether or not it’s a sin for Christians to eat halal food goes beyond just knowledge. As Paul says, knowledge puffs up, but love builds up (1 Cor. 8:1). Love ought to be what we fall back on. Even if you have got expert knowledge that could be good for you, how do you construct up your brother or sister? You do this by showing them love and respecting their convictions. Here is how Paul words it:

Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I won’t ever eat meat again, in order that I won’t cause them to fall. – 1 Corinthians 8:13

The real issue here shouldn’t be really about food or drink, but about loving your brother or sister. Regardless of the conviction, if my eating halal food is something that leads them to sin, then even when my faith gives me the liberty to do it, I’ll refrain when of their presence. Not due to me, but because I care about them. Even if this implies I never eat halal food again.

Final Thoughts on Christians Eating Halal Food

Let me sum this up into one succinct guideline. A Christian can eat halal food so long as they are usually not violating their very own conscience or the conscience of one other believer by eating it of their presence. Other than that, you’re just eating food, and it’s there so that you can enjoy. So, if you need to eat halal food, outside of the exceptions I discussed, there may be nothing unsuitable with doing that.
