Most people in Britain consider that Christmas has grow to be too industrial and would really like a return to tradition, a latest survey has found.

The survey was commissioned by The Children’s Society and based on responses from 2,000 adults living in Britain. 

Around two thirds agreed with the view that Christmas has grow to be too industrial and 57 per cent missed the traditions of their childhood. 

Half of those surveyed said they might enjoy, or participate in, traditions equivalent to Christingle services.

The Christingle is an orange with a candle, red ribbon and 4 sticks with sweets on them. While an apparently easy object, the Christingle is the truth is stuffed with Christian symbolism.

The orange represents the world, the ribbon Christ’s blood and sacrifice. The candle symbolises Christ as light of the world and hope, and the 4 sticks represent the 4 corners of the earth. Finally the sweets are symbols of God’s gifts to man in creation.

Christingle itself means “Christ’s light”.

Mark Russell, CEO of The Children’s Society, said, “We hear from families who feel that Christmas has grow to be frantic, industrial and disconnected from the things that really matter. Christingle is a probability to decelerate, reconnect, and convey meaning back to the season.”

It is believed the primary Christingles originated within the 18th century within the Moravian church and commenced with just the candle and the ribbon. It was a member of The Children’s Society, John Pensom, who added the orange and the sweets to the tradition in 1968.

The Children’s Society shall be involved in over 2,000 Christingle events across the country this 12 months. As well as being a celebration of Christ and tradition, the events can even serve to lift money for youngsters prone to loneliness, abuse or mental health problems.

Russell said, “Christingle events help raise vital funds so we are able to support children who feel alone, overwhelmed or unheard – offering a secure space, trusted adults and practical help when life can seem an excessive amount of.”
