Why Creation Calms a Quarreling Heart

Get Outside. This is not only a suggestion; it is a lifestyle. Studies show that Americans spend 95% of their lives indoors, cut off from the natural world. Can you suspect that!? We spend most of our time in our homes, workplaces, and vehicles, leaving only a meager 5% of our lives to be spent outdoors.

James, the half-brother of Jesus, shares wisdom that supports the concept of stepping outside. In James 4:1-2, he writes, “What is causing the quarrels and fights amongst you? Don’t they arrive from the evil desires at war inside you?” James points out that the conflicts we experience often stem from inside ourselves. By getting outside, we are able to gain perspective and address the inner struggles that result in external conflicts.

Spending time in nature has profound advantages for our physical, mental, and spiritual health. It can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance creativity. Renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “I am going to nature day-after-day for inspiration within the day’s work.” Nature’s beauty and majesty remind us of God’s creation and might encourage us to live more fully.

The Bible teaches us that our surroundings can impact our well-being. Psalm 19:1 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” When we immerse ourselves in God’s creation, we’re reminded of His greatness and our place inside His vast and delightful world.

Practically, getting outside can mean taking a walk within the park, mountain climbing a trail, or just sitting in your backyard. These moments of reference to nature might help us reflect on our lives and align our thoughts with God’s will. In doing so, we are able to find peace and clarity, allowing us to deal with the deeper issues inside ourselves.

James also advises us to “humble yourselves before the Lord, and he’ll lift you up” (James 4:10). Humility allows us to see our need for God and recognize that our strength comes from Him. By stepping outside and humbling ourselves, we are able to experience God’s grace and find the strength to beat our struggles.

Let’s make a conscious effort to get outside more often. Embrace the fantastic thing about God’s creation, allow it to refresh your soul, and let it’s a reminder of His greatness and love. As we spend time outdoors, may we draw closer to God, gain perspective, and find the strength to deal with the problems inside us. Remember, getting outside shouldn’t be only a physical act but a spiritual one which can bring us closer to our Creator and His purpose for our lives.
