We see urgent, heartfelt pleas for followers to answer the varied crises unfolding across the globe. While the needs being highlighted are sometimes very real, seeing them online so often actually stunts our ability to take real motion. Yes, posts and articles can make clear things, but taking motion requires the prompting of the Holy Spirit.Â
Not to say, compassion fatigue is real, and over time, the bombardment of bad news leaves us feeling helpless to make any real difference on this world. Most of the time, the work we are able to do and Christ is leading us towards exists within the context of our day by day lives in our particular locality. So over and over, we’re distracted by global tragedies (of which there may be an limitless stream), and we miss out on the problems that face our neighbors, friends, city, or state.Â
Yes, we are able to pray for the wars and injustices which are faced across the globe. We can vote properly for the leaders making decisions that impact these events, but practically, what we are able to become involved with will exist in your particular community.Â
If you see a worldwide problem that moves your heart as a Christ follower, the subsequent step to being a lightweight is finding a neighborhood solution to make an impact. If your heart hurts for broken families, then getting involved along with your local DSS is your best next step, as is potentially becoming licensed as a foster parent. If the plight of a refugee grieves you, find support for those in your locality. If racism has you up at night, engage with a Be the Bridge group or start one!Â
I even have bad news: As a Christ follower, an impassioned post will not be enough. God calls us to be his hands and feet, which requires getting a bit of dirty on this world’s muddy chaos.
