Will Smith talks God, faith and fulfilment with Lecrae

“Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” The latest person to find the reality of King Solomon’s words, written hundreds of years ago, is none apart from Hollywood superstar Will Smith.

Speaking with Christian rapper Lecrae, Smith said that over the previous few years he has done lots of “inward work” and realised that after reaching the very best heights of fame and riches, there continues to be an ideal emptiness.

Smith is just not himself a Christian, as an alternative saying that his religion is “love” and has been influenced by quite a few religious traditions. However, he stated that he has learned to “trust himself and God” to “let go” of those things in his life which should not useful.

He also noted that while many individuals turn to God after they reach all-time low in life, his experience has been the other – turning to Him after discovering the emptiness in having all the things.

“It is such a rare gift to achieve the top of the fabric world, to achieve the top of cash. To get to the purpose where you’ll be able to buy anything you wish, and also you sit in your home and there’s nothing else to purchase. Whereas buying things used to scratch an itch,” he told Lecrae.

“Now there’s nothing else to purchase … To have had all of the sex that you just wanted. How many more primary movies do I want? How many more Grammys do I want? It’s such a rare gift to get to the top of the fabric world and a spot where only God is left.”

Smith continued, “People often try this after they hit all-time low. But there’s a corresponding place to all-time low which I call cliff top. Where you truly come out of the fabric world and also you [realize] there’s nothing left here … And inward is the one place left.”

The actor also told Lecrae that he wished everyone could have this experience to be able to learn the identical lesson that having all the things cannot fully satisfy the human soul. 

He said, “There’s no country you’ll be able to go to. There’s no relationship you’ll be able to start. No recent job that’s going to do it… You get to the top of it. It’s excruciating, but I would want that on everybody. I wish everybody could get all the things they need to see that it doesn’t satisfy.”

Smith’s comments echo the words of Solomon in Ecclesiastes chapter 2, wherein the fantastic king tells of how he fulfilled every desire he could possibly conceive of, but still found all of it meaningless.
