A former church leader has teamed up with a rock guitarist to release a Christmas song.
The Very Rev Albert Bogle served as moderator of the Church of Scotland from 2012 to 2013. Together together with his musical partner, Iain Jamieson, and Graeme Duffin of Wet Wet Wet fame, he has produced the song “Room on the Table”.
The aim of the song is to remind people of the true meaning of Christmas and to advertise compassion and tolerance.
Bogle said, “We desired to create a Christmas song that acknowledges the challenges people face but ultimately offers a beacon of hope and inclusion. The message is straightforward – there may be all the time ‘room on the table’ and sometimes, we just need to make it.”
Songwriting is just one other medium to specific one’s faith, and an efficient way of sharing the Christmas story, Bogle argues.
“Nobody listens to a sermon over and yet again, but they may with a song,” he said.
“I actually have been writing and recording Christmas songs for quite some time now. Last yr’s Christmas single was almost a protest carol against every little thing that was happening in Gaza and elsewhere and called ‘Angels over Bethlehem.’
“There was a sadness in that one, almost asking God if He could send some angels to bring peace and make all of them re-evaluate.
“This yr, I used to be occupied with the rise in populism and the change in public attitude towards people who find themselves homeless or refugees and asylum seekers and the politicians who’re promoting the concept that there is just one pie and there will not be enough for everybody.”
While Duffin could also be higher known for his work because the guitarist for Wet Wet Wet, he has actually been related to Bogle and Jamieson for 20 years and has been a committed Christian for many of his life.
Wet Wet Wet’s biggest hit was “Love is All Around”, a canopy of the song by The Troggs. It became a world hit after appearing on the soundtrack to the 1994 movie Four Weddings and a Funeral, and spent 15 weeks at primary within the UK.
