As a lady who’s susceptible to anxiety and battles bouts of depression, I understand and might sympathize when the stress rises and turns right into a full-blown panic attack. It could be alarming and scary while you begin to feel that inner heat flood out of your racing heart, producing sweaty palms, trembling limbs, and a tightness in your chest, making it hard to catch your breath.
The last time I had a panic attack, I used to be forced to ride an elevator with the intention to visit my uncle within the hospital. The stairs were locked for the staff and staff that day, so I had no other alternative but to take an elevator as much as the fifth floor. Yet, before I even stepped into that enclosed box, that every one too familiar wave of warmth washed over me, and I immediately began hyperventilating. Claustrophobia has at all times struck my fear hormone, kicking my panic mode into hyperdrive.
Unfortunately, that takes shape not only in the shape of being physically restricted to tight spaces and feeling utterly trapped, but in addition after I feel certain and suffocated by my very own emotional state. This happened shortly after my mom passed, and I used to be home alone watching considered one of her favorite movies. I assumed by doing this, it will bring back fond memories and subsequently promote peace. But, in reality, because my emotions were still so raw, it caused the grief I carried to spin uncontrolled as I choked back tears and located it difficult to breathe. Â
If you or someone you dearly love is susceptible to panic attacks, let me first share how sorry I’m that you just struggle with this too, as I know the way debilitating and lonely this journey could be. However, over time, I actually have sought support and have learned how you can recognize the situations and emotions that generally trigger that panic button, so I can try to stop a full-blown attack. Intentional and deep respiratory, getting outside to soak in some sunshine, or simply calling a friend have been very helpful.
However, essentially the most useful method to calm my heart, ease the concern, and restore a way of peace has been reading Scripture and praying aloud. Next time you already know you will likely be in a situation that might fire up worry or panic strikes suddenly, lean into these Scriptures and prayers. Print them out and have them readily available. Then in times of need, read them quietly in your mind, speak them out loud, and etch them on the material of your heart, allowing God to cover you and reclaim a way of peace so your mind, body, and soul can chill out and rest in His care.
