THE Archbishop of Canterbury intends to finish his official duties by Epiphany, it was announced on Wednesday.
A brief statement from Lambeth Palace said that Archbishop Welby “intends little or no public-facing activity between now and Epiphany, but plans to honour a small variety of remaining commitments”.
The statement says that, from Epiphany, the Archbishop’s official functions can be “delegated” to the Archbishop of York, but that “more details can be provided on this in the end.”
The date on which Archbishop Welby formally ceases to carry office — separate from his withdrawal from official duties — “can be set in agreement with the Privy Council”, the statement says.
