Bishop of Southwark hospitalised after being injured in a taxi

THE Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, is recovering in hospital after he was injured when a taxi by which he was travelling made an emergency stop.

On Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the diocese of Southwark said that Bishop Chessun “has received some medical treatment and stays in hospital in the meanwhile, but he’s recovering well and receiving excellent care”.

They added that the Bishop was “enormously grateful for people’s expressions of concern and for his or her prayers”.

Clergy within the diocese were informed of the incident on Tuesday, in a letter from the Area Bishops, who said that Bishop Chessun was because of have surgery, and would want “a period of convalescence”.

In a social media post on Wednesday morning, the Precentor of Southwark Cathedral, Canon Kathryn Fleming, wrote: “The very lovely Bishop of Southwark needs our prayers owing an accident on Monday night.”

The Bishop had been attending the installation of the brand new Area Bishops of Kingston, Dr Martin Gainsborough, and Woolwich, the Rt Revd Alastair Cutting.

“I hate that, in effect, we sent him off to be hurt as he left the cathedral that evening after one other installation, and so glad that, as ever, we prayed for him within the service,” Canon Fleming wrote.
