Fact checking abortion

The general media appear to have a consensus concerning the recent presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Firstly, Trump is somewhat economical with the reality and wishes to be fact checked; and secondly that Harris’s strongpoint is abortion.

From BBC Verify to the ABC moderators, it seems that ‘fact checking’ is all the craze. So, I assumed I’d do a bit of of my very own for the advantage of Christian Today readers.

At the start of the controversy about abortion, Harris said we were going to listen to a bunch of lies. She was right – there have been many.

1. “There isn’t any state on this country where it’s legal to kill a baby after it’s born. This statement was made by certainly one of the moderators. This was a disingenuous ‘fact check’. While infanticide isn’t yet legal in any US state, in among the states where abortion is allowed at any time, babies who’re born alive after a failed abortion could be left to die. Ralph Northam, the previous Virginia governor, testified that the infant can be delivered after which left to die. In 2019, Harris herself voted against laws that will have given protection to babies born alive after failed abortions. Tim Walz, her vice-presidential candidate, signed laws which gave an unqualified right to abortion up to date of birth and removed protections for youngsters born alive after abortion. Of course, that is rare – just as the acute cases for abortion, like a life-threatening danger to the mother are rare – yet it’s permitted and does occur.

2. “Donald Trump will sign a national abortion ban under his Project 2025.” He said he was not signing a ban because there was no reason to sign a ban. He explicitly stated, “I’m not in favour of an abortion ban.” And he denies that Project 2025 is anything to do with him.

3. “Couples who pray and dream of getting a family have been denied IVF under Trump’s abortion ban.” As he identified, he was a frontrunner on IVF. Abortion restrictions don’t prevent IVF.

4. “Doctors are fearful of treating miscarriages in case they’re accused of abortion.” If that were the case – and there isn’t a evidence it’s (where are those ABC fact checkers when we’d like them?!), then the doctors can be mistaken. Miscarriage is entirely different from abortion.

5. “It’s insulting to the ladies of America to suggest that ladies are asking for an abortion near full term.” Harris was answering the query about whether she would support any restrictions on abortion. To be more accurate, she was avoiding the query by stating that this just doesn’t occur. If she was telling the reality then why would not it’s insulting to the ladies of Alaska, Colorado, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon and Vermont that their governments all allow abortion on demand as much as full term? Why do they not restrict abortion as much as foetal viability, as does her own state of California? Was her vice-presidential pick, Walz, insulting women when he passed a law saying they may have an abortion as much as nine months for any reason? And why did the moderators of the controversy not fact check her on this?

6. “Abortion is reproductive healthcare.” This is a double lie and a masterpiece of Orwellian ‘1984’ style language. “War is Peace”, “Lies are Truth”, “Love is Hate”. Abortion is about stopping reproduction, not enabling it. Its purpose is to stop the birth of a toddler. In greater than 99 per cent of cases this isn’t about ‘healthcare’. A tiny percentage of abortions occur in an effort to save the lifetime of the mother. That can be healthcare. But taking the lifetime of the infant for economic or social reasons is precisely the alternative of healthcare. Abortion is basically for economic or social care, quite than healthcare.

7. “I’ll restore the protections of Roe v. Wade.” “This is all about reproductive freedom.” This is a half lie. There is indeed ‘protection’ for individuals who want to take the lifetime of their very own baby. But there isn’t a protection for the infant. Abortion is to reproductive freedom as slavery is to economic freedom.

8. “The freedom to make decisions about your individual body mustn’t be made by the federal government.” Given that Harris was a component of the federal government that mandated vaccinations for all federal employees, she clearly doesn’t imagine that the federal government has no right to inform people what to do with their very own bodies. We should not have the proper to walk naked down the high street, defecate in public gardens, or to drive drunk on the highway. Government will and may limit us in some areas of our bodily autonomy. Of course, there are questions as to how much they need to limit us however the argument for absolute bodily autonomy from a Vice-President who limits bodily autonomy is a hypocritical lie.

9. “The government and Donald Trump especially should not have the proper to inform a girl what to do together with her body.” This argument from bodily autonomy also fails once you recognise that there may be multiple body involved. The government limits our bodily autonomy after we are a threat to a different human body. Which is why, for instance, we ban drink-driving. This is clearly the case in abortion. There is one other human body involved. The baby is a human baby – a human life – with its own gender, blood type, heart, body etc. Because abortion is a threat to the lifetime of one other human being it’s entirely appropriate for the federal government to hunt to preserve that life. In passing, we should always note that there may be also no less than one other body involved – that of the daddy. He is predicted, rightly, to pay for and support his own children. Does he haven’t any say in any respect in whether his child must be killed within the womb?

10. Let’s consider the abandonment of religion or “deeply held belief”. If you’re a Catholic like President Biden, or indeed one other Christian, then once you walk away from the teachings of Jesus Christ, you’re abandoning your faith. Your belief is hardly deeply held should you will give it up for political gain or for a Hellish doctrine of autonomy. The devil’s great temptation at first was to vow that humans can be like God if we just made our own way. The modern lie of complete autonomy finally ends up making us more like Satan, the destroyer of life, than God, the giver of Life.

It mustn’t surprise us that Harris’s position was filled with lies, since it relies on the nice lie, coming from the Father of Lies. Sadly, most of our media, politicians and academics participate on this lie and canopy up the reality. In 2015, the then California Attorney-General suppressed undercover videos which showed Planned Parenthood abortionists discussing find out how to dismember a body in order that they might not be prosecuted under the partial birth abortion ban and discussing find out how to distribute body parts. Last week these were finally released, and so they are as horrific as they sound. The query is: why would Kamala Harris seek to maintain these covered up for nine years and as a substitute prosecute the one who made them?

I recently made a complete podcast on the problem of abortion. It was probably the most difficult I even have ever needed to do since it is such a deep, complex and private subject. Yet the responses indicated just how needed it’s for Christians to talk clearly and compassionately into this most divisive of issues. I used to be contacted by several individuals who were so thankful that they, or their parents, had resisted the pressure to have an abortion. May God bless America and reserve it from reverting to a pre-Christian Greco/Roman/Pagan death cult.
