4 Advantages and 4 Disadvantages of Chronic Church Hopping

One essential thing to recollect is that, as Christians, we’re members of the church universal—God’s church. There’s a saying: In heaven, there might be no denominations, no sects, and no divisions. We will all be one, united in Christ our savior. As Jesus prayed in John 17:11:

“Holy Father, protect them by the ability of your name, the name you gave me, in order that they could be one as we’re one.”

As Christians, we truly are one. Colossians 1:18 says that Christ is the head of the church, and the church is his body. As the body of Christ, it shouldn’t matter where we worship or gather, for all of us are connected and one within the Holy Spirit. All Christian brothers and sisters are our siblings, not only those who sit next to us in church.

Church hopping will help make clear this because we start seeing other Christians less as strangers and more as neighbors and siblings in Christ.

Instead of looking as much as the pastor as some superhuman, we are able to recognize the pastor is a human identical to us, though called and equipped by the Lord to evangelise or exhort or teach or otherwise help strengthen us on our journey in the religion. We can give attention to what is really essential about Christianity: the incontrovertible fact that Jesus is our savior, that he’s the Son of God, that we’re all called to repent and consider in Christ, that we’re saved by God’s grace and never our own works, that Jesus was crucified to pay our sin-debt, etc.

Sometimes, churches begin to get inward-focused and pay more attention to smaller-scale arguments and differences amongst believers, but church hopping enables us to avoid getting stuck within the stagnant mire that may be petty church in-fighting and as an alternative give attention to Jesus’s big picture call to go, make disciples, and spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
