THE Bishop of St Asaph, the Rt Revd Gregory Cameron, introduced Daily with God, a latest prayer manual for the Church in Wales. He told the meeting how, as a young Christian, he had learned establish his own prayer life: on the varsity bus, a 20-minute journey each way, using a booklet, In His Presence, which had a pattern of prayer and suggested text.
“We felt we wanted a prayer resource to set out a number of the great prayers we have now inherited within the Church of Wales,” he said, speaking of the richness of the Anglican tradition of prayer. The book includes short forms to be used in morning, evening, and night prayer, commonly used canticles, prayers, and key texts, general thanksgivings, a suggested cycle of prayer, and a basic weekly lectionary.
It is meant to be used as a stand-alone for saying morning and evening prayer when travelling away from home, and in addition comprises guidance for Ignatian spirituality and prayers for each season. Two of the items were authorised during lockdown: short orders of prayer for many who were unable to attend communion or a funeral in person.
“It authentically belongs to the Church in Wales. It is bilingual throughout, and has a wealth of original Welsh material,” Bishop Cameron said. “It is a selected joy to me that a number of the Welsh texts should not translated into English — they’re a distinctly Welsh inheritance.
“This book could provide a wealthy resource for the long run for a few years yet. I feel it is a useful text, and I commend it to you to offer out to congregation members, latest members, and confirmands.”
The book, costing £12.99, was available on the meeting, where it was selling out fast. It can also be available from: churchinwales.org.uk
