CANON David Morris has been appointed by the Archbishop of Wales as Assistant Bishop of Bangor. Thirteen years ago, he was the youngest priest within the Church in Wales; now, he’ll make history by becoming its youngest-ever bishop, on the age of 37.
Originally from Cymmer, within the Rhondda Valley, he was ordained priest in 2010 at Llandaff Cathedral, and served his curacy in Merthyr Tydfil. In 2019, he was appointed Director of Ordinands for Llandaff diocese and Vicar within the East Vale Ministry Area, within the Vale of Glamorgan, a post that he held for 3 years until moving to Bangor.
“Being called to function Assistant Bishop within the diocese of Bangor is the best possible privilege. I studied theology on the University in Bangor, and since I returned to the diocese in 2022, my love for this very special a part of the world, and for its people, has grown all of the deeper. . . I look forward very much to playing my part in helping those communities grow and thrive.”
The appointment has been approved by all of the Church in Wales bishops and will likely be confirmed at a Sacred Synod meeting in April. He will likely be consecrated as a bishop on 11 May, and can adopt the title of Bishop of Bardsey, in addition to Assistant Bishop of Bangor.
In his spare time, David enjoys gardening, travelling, keeping fit, and spending time together with his fiancé, Marc Penny, and his cat, Gordon.
